Ever since Sir Arthur Evans publicized the bare-breasted women in Minoan art in the early 20th century, academics and the public alike have assumed that women figured much more prominently in Minoan art and society than men did. This assumption has formed the basis of theories suggesting that ancient Minoan women held an authoritarian position similar to that which men now hold throughout much of the world. However, the few items that Evans focused on are not representative of the whole of Minoan art and give an inaccurate view both of the art and of women's place in Minoan society. A careful investigation shows that there is, in fact, an almost exactly equal representation of male and female figures overall. Using this more accurate data suggests that, rather than a female-dominated society, the Minoans were most likely a gender-egalitarian culture.

"We are the Living Magic of the Cosmos; The Cosmos is also within us. We are made of star star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself“ Carl Sagan. Animism is the belief that objects, places and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. Potentially, animism perceives all things "animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, human handiwork and perhaps even words”as animated and alive. When we expand this ancient understanding into our workaday world, how does it affect our live as citizens, activists, voters and representatives of a growing Pagan movement? When animism is applied to economic and class struggles, it informs both thought and action. This paper looks at the practical aspects of being animists in the clutch of capitalist systems.
When most pagans hear the term Heathen, they instantly think of the Norse gods and goddesses. Although our best sources come from Scandinavia, Heathen beliefs existed across most of Northern Europe, not only in Scandinavia, but also England, Germany, and nearby regions. This will be a panel discussion by Heathens who practice Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Frankish, and Continental Germanic Heathenry. The panelists are Joseph Beofeld (Anglo-Saxon), Jenn Dodson (Norse/Continental Germanic/Anglo-Saxon), Dane Roberts (Norse/Frankish), and Donnie Schultz (Urglaawe). We will look at the similarities and differences in these Heathen practices and deities. We will also discuss issues in modern reconstruction of these practices, such as written sources, folk traditions, and archaeological evidence.

How many of us carry around crystals, talismans, and charms to help us manifest a wish, a hope, and a dream? What do you do with it after its work is done? My guess? To have one jar act as a battery and energy booster, a manifestation source for all your hopes and dreams. This workshop talks about how to create that Hope Jar and how you can use it to carry that energy into the future.

The fifteenth century philosopher George Gemistos Plethon led a small, secret group worshiping the Greek gods. He hoped to establish a universal Pagan religion based on Ancient Greek Paganism and Neoplatonic theology. His ideas inspired Renaissance mages such as Marsilio Ficino, thus reviving ancient Pagan thought in Western Europe and awakening Hermetic and Neoplatonic spirituality and magic. In this talk I will present an introduction to Plethon's religious rituals and spiritual ideas, as presented in my recent book, "The Secret Texts of Hellenic Polytheism: A Practical Guide to the Restored Pagan Religion of George Gemistos Plethon" (Llewellyn, 2022), which explains and includes the first complete English translations of the parts of his work that survived destruction by his Christian enemies.

It is said that when the Tuatha De Danann arrived on the shores of Ireland they went in the four directions to four magical cities where they learned the magic they would need. They returned to the center of the land with this magic, wisdom and a talisman for each. I have developed a magical practice with these four talismans and the magical energies they convey that is at once a devotion, an incantation and a magical working for our lives in the world. When we view the destructive forces at work in the world, we as magical practitioners can feel overwhelmed and as if our magic is useless against such forces. The Four Talismans can help us be forces for the powers of love, wisdom and truth in the world. Participants will receive background and context for this practice, and then will participate in a group experience using it.
Modern botanical science has finally reached a point where the hidden lives of plants are not so hidden. Plant ecologists have been studying their behavior, strategies, and cultures for hundreds of years. But recent academic research on plant intelligence has allowed us to understand them as a unique group of species with agency. Add a dash of animism and what you discover is a rich accounting of their incredible lives and their full potential as partners. This presentation will shed light on the hidden lives of plants by focusing on their ecology and discoveries in the new field of plant intelligence. It will end with a discussion of recently published books by botanists, and their reporter fans, who may or may not know that their work is infused with animism. Works that provide valuable insights and offer an animism grounded in both the spiritual and scientific realms.
Do you farm, yet as pagans we follow the seasons of the year, maybe even do some gardening? Do you have a bigger need to recognize other things seasonally through the year? Create a liturgical calendar, or seasonal remembrances based on society, family, function of tribe, or based on the gods that represent each aspect of life. Have you integrated the wheel or times of the year into your practices? This workshop is designed to explore how you may want to create your own wheel of the year.
A lot of guided meditation focuses on visual imagery. Other senses, such as smells, touch and taste can deepen the meditation. Beyond the enhancing of meditation for all, it can help those with aphantasia be included and learn to mediate with these meditation styles. This will be an expanded version of the one from last year, including a couple of techniques to use to expand techniques for grounding, ways to use this at home by yourself, and for people you know. I will also be running an expanded and extended meditation.
For many Pagans, our spiritual journeys did not start in Paganism. Rather, we began in a different religion, and later on transitioned over to Paganism, stemming from a desire to continue having a religious and spiritual path, but a path that better matches who we are and allows us to follow our own calling. Such a transition is rarely easy, and as Mika experienced firsthand when she began her path in 2023, it can force us to confront the hardships, disillusionment, and trauma we experienced as a result of our previous religion. Oftentimes these barriers are kept mentally buried away or unrealized until we're given the opportunity to break free from them. This talk will focus on some of the difficulties and discoveries that can occur as part of one's religious transition, and how they can be important in reshaping and growing one's religious and spiritual path for the better.
Have you ever wondered why one ritual is so effective and another one can just leave you flat? Do you wonder what each part of the circle casting is for? Why do we do them in a specific order and what effect does each accomplish? This workshop is going to explore these questions. When we know what each part of the ritual needs to accomplish, it can make us more powerful ritual creators.
This workshop is about nurturing different ways of facing illness, as alternatives to the usual approaches of Western medicine. The focus is on relating to illness, not diagnosis or treatment, regardless of context or modalities. This is not about shaming anyone for using the resources of Western medicine or disregarding its benefits. Rather, this space recognizes limitations & encourages you to move beyond the binaries, especially in regards to chronic conditions. Skye will share about their experiences (30+ years of chronic pain, 5+ years of Long Covid), most of which have been outside Western medicine. There will also be time for group discussion. If you've wanted more support, if you're curious, or if you're frustrated with Western medicine, this is a non-clinical space to learn & discuss, without pressure or anything prescriptive. The purpose is to cultivate relationship & ritual that nourish you & align with your values and practices.
Many people grew up reciting nursery rhymes about the collapse of famous bridges, children with their thumbs buried in baked goods, or the market practices of talking pigs. What they may not know, however, is that a great many nursery rhymes also have their roots in occult charms designed to predict the future, ward off bad weather, grant wishes, or work other magics. This session explores how many rhymes have their origins in magical charms and predictive rituals of bygone ages. We will also spend some time with old Mother Goose herself, who has some particularly spooky and supernatural origins as a witch-figure from European folklore (and possibly even a belly-slitting goddess named Perchta from German mythology).
The Witches' Pyramid is a concept that many witches hold in high regard as one the foundational pillars of witchcraft. It is both a learning tool for the beginner witch and a philosophy to abide by while performing magick. As Paganism grows in popularity, there is an increase in the need for good Pagan leaders. Join. Rev. Emily for this informational discussion of how you can apply the principles of the Witches' Pyramid to your leadership to help your community grow and to help you serve your community.
Pagan infrastructure is severely lacking, leaving us as isolated organizations connected by shared goals but divided by internal operations. While we often know about the activities of other Pagan groups, collaboration for common purposes remains rare. However, successful collective efforts, such as gaining recognition of Pagan traditions by the Department of Veterans Affairs, show what we can achieve when working together. The rise of Christian dominion theology poses a serious threat to the separation of church and state, jeopardizing the rights and freedoms of diverse religious and spiritual communities. This panel will bring representatives from various organizations and solitary practitioners and critically the audience to discuss how to unite to protect this fundamental principle. By fostering collaboration, we aim to ensure a future where the separation of church and state is preserved while supporting the growth and sustainability of both faith-based and secular Pagan communities.

Many who have an inclination towards magic may not have a dedicated space set aside for performing spellwork and ritual. However, most of us have a front door, and it is here that we are invited to engage with and perhaps re-enchant a part of our homes which is often taken for granted. In this talk we will explore the front doorway of our home as a locus for spirit work, practical charming, and magical workings. We will examine diverse perspectives, folklore, and approaches towards engaging with our doorway as a nexus of power and potentiality. This work is practical, effective, and at times incredibly illuminating and enriching. And may be seen as an extension of working with and relating to the home as both a spiritual entity and an ecosystem of spirits that we might better know and form closer relations with.

As modern pagans, the diversity of our gods, systems, and practices is both a challenge and a strength. Rather than exacerbate differences, we should seek common ground to encourage a healthy and cohesive community. One thing many of us share is the presence of heroes in our mythologies. Central to the protection of humanity, these mighty warriors provide a cohesive undercurrent upon which we may build new avenues for community and communal practice. Please join us for an eclectic ritual honoring the various iterations of Pagan heroes, such as Sigurd the Dragon Slayer, Beowulf, Hercules, Cu Chulainn, and others. This ritual will involve several members of the Mystic South community, including Rev. Sr. Clio Ajana, Rev. Fr. Moonraven-luvantas, Jen Dodson, Atterkopp, Beofeld, and Sanat Kumara. Each participant will represent and invoke a hero relevant to their personal practice and/or pantheon and contribute to a communal altar-space.

Kispum is a ritual of relationships with the dead that began in Sumerian/Akkadian (2500 BCE) culture . The ritual explores practices for the Pagan and occult communities to maintain connections with departed loved ones and honor ancestors. I incorporate the Continuing Bonds Theory as a modern (1970s) alternative to the Western Detachment Theory of "letting go" of the dead. This perspective embraces the idea of ongoing relationships beyond death, focusing on rituals, commemorations, and sacred practices that sustain these connections. My modern take emphasizes the significance of these enduring ties, providing insight into how such traditions and rituals within Pagan spirituality foster a sense of continuity. The session includes an optional pouring water ritual, to which attendees are welcome to participate. Come with the names of beloved dead. The ritual will be explained.

The aesthetic emphasis in modern paganism often takes precedence over substance. Many pagans center their aesthetics around pop-culture projections as opposed to authentic lineages. As a result, others de-emphasize aesthetics to pursue a deeper essence. However, the more we sacrifice spiritual expression, the less translatable our work. How can we rectify this conflict between flare and substance? The answers lie with a tenth-century Tantric philosopher named Abhinavagupta, whose influence extends beyond his role as a guru, as he was well-educated in the humanities. He believed aesthetics were fundamentally spiritual, born of the intersection between spirit and emotion, and (vibration/resonance), described as the very basis of reality. By applying Abhinavagupta theories to pagan practice, we may imbue our aesthetics with the spiritual depth of the rasa, thus counteracting the superficiality of these expressions by anchoring them not to the contrived projections of popular culture, but the soul itself.

In any magical tradition, understanding the core principles is key to unlocking the deeper layers of practice. One such foundational concept central to Western magic is the three-fold world, a framework and perspective that permeates not only Western esotericism but also many pagan and Indo-European traditions. In this workshop we will peer through the lens of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, one of the most prolific magicians of the late medieval period; his writings on this three-fold world and how it lends to a unique and nuanced understanding of magical correspondences, the powers permeating the natural world, the three-fold law, and many other key concepts that continue to shape modern occult philosophy.

This paper offers a transnational feminist interpretation of the 21st century pagan voice. A multiple minority within a minority religiously, the concept of religious voice can only be taken . Articulated by Charles Taylor, Talal Asad, and Homi Bhabha in 2021, through their commentary on ethnic-religious minorities with further critique and examination of several models including a post secular and dialogical model, an anti-secular traditionalist model, and a pro†secular and vernacular model, recent events emphasizes how Pagan voices need to be re-examined in the light of how pagan, Heathen, and polytheist views are presented through highlights of intersectional aspects of identities that appear in contemporary society. Through this lensthis article looks at how utilizing several models to dispel stereotypes of neopaganism in concert with the continued rising popularity of non-monot

Few figures in Norse paganism and Germanic heathenry are as well known as Berserkers and the Ulfdenar. When hearing of these warriors, one might assume they are nothing but myth and legend. However, truth can often be stranger than fiction. These shapeshifting warriors of Norse paganism and Germanic Heathenry have actual historical inspirations ranging from bear-wearing Germanic mercenaries of the Roman Empire to as far back as the Indo-European Mannerbund. In this workshop, we will explore the fascinating history and archaeology of these warriors of Norse paganism and Germanic heathenry.

In this workshop we will examine and discuss: Good versus evil, black versus white, male versus female, light versus dark. In America today, we are all too familiar with these moral absolutes, aren't we? We may be a diverse mix of folks here, but the dominant cultures from which this patriarchy emerged ”the British Isles, and European Christianity”built moral codes on stories of good vs evil. These codes have dangerous repercussions as they are used to ascribe moral value to ideas, things... and even people. Who helps us to examine this state of juxtaposition, this friction? Artists. Poets. Storytellers. Taking inspiration from a collection of “Hanged Oneâ€_x009d_ tarot cards, and exploring the artists' interpretations, we will examine concepts of flipping, of being upside down, of turning absolutes on their head.
In this discussion we will examine the roll of dolls and effigies throughout various magical traditions, as well as examine practical ways that we may meaningfully incorporate them into a contemporary practice based upon established history.

We will then explore the more advanced applications of this art by discussing methods for creating and employing effigies as spirit houses and devotional objects. And finally, we will conclude by discussing the various materials and methods we might use for the construction of effigies, as well as techniques for consecration and enlivening them towards a magical purposes.
Associated with the talismans of Picatrix, Ficino and Agrippa, a major magical tradition arose during the medieval era called the Science of Images. It was a complex union of astrology, theurgy, minerology, and evocation that boasted vast power to warp reality. It was employed by princes and popes to alter the fates of both individuals and entire nations. Albertus Magnus, Joseph Smith, William Lilly, Paracelsus, Lorenzo de' Medici, Giordano Bruno, and Pope Urban VIII were practitioners. Codified in the Middle East, it was transmitted into Europe where it flourished for six centuries. Today it is undergoing a revival. In this class we will cover the history of this tradition as well as the writings, beliefs and practices of its disciples.
The Elder Futhark create a beautiful system of divination, though finding good information about them can be difficult - especially for queer, progressive, modern heathens and witches. Norse mythology includes an incredible diversity of gender and sexual expression, but this has been largely excluded from books published on contemporary heathenry or runic divination. Even worse, the runes have been wrongfully co-opted by white supremacists and heathens have to actively fight against this stereotype of the rune reader. In recent years, rune readers have been reclaiming the feminine side of the runes, bringing nuance to the craft. In this talk, Siri will explore the queer qualities of the runes through understanding pre-Christian Nordic gender concepts, translating that through a simulation and simulacra, and carving from this root culture a modern future-facing divination system.

Join Temple of the Rising Phoenix Matriarch and several Priests and Priestesses of this American Wiccan Tradition as they present a panel on what it is like to be part of an initiatory lineage. Members will share their personal experiences "both challenges and rewards“ of being part of a longstanding lineage of over 45 years and learning and growing in this kind of structure. The Tradition is a syncretic, initiatory, mystery religion dedicated to the worship of the Goddess and God through ritual practices, magick and esoteric processes for the purposes of enlightenment, spiritual advancement, and attunement with nature.
For two years now a group has come together to celebrate our curves, lumps, and bumps and to fight a system that shames us via self-love and community. This process of creating our own sacred space, of community, love, sharing, support and healing, became a beautiful ritual once again in 2024. We want to create that sacred space again, to dive deeply into the love, healing, and revolution needed for body liberation in all spaces - from ritual to residential, classroom to coven! We will explore and celebrate shape with reflection, movement/music, and make time for everyone to share their feelings and experiences, as well as how these connect (or don't) with their ritual/spiritual experiences. And spend time talking about ways to advocate for accessibility for all bodies. Everyone is welcome, whether you were in previous circles or not!
Hans Dieter Betz, editor of the Greek Magical Papyri in Translation (PGM), proposes that “In its Hellenistic transformation, the Egyptian religion of the pre-Hellenistic era appears to have been reduced and simplified, no doubt to facilitate its assimilation into Hellenistic religion as the predominant cultural reference. I argue that in contemporary Paganism, revival and reconstruction continues this process. In 1999, I was an experienced Wiccan ritualist and magic worker who read the PGM. Eyes opened to a faraway time and magical culture, I was eager to try a PGM ritual for myself. I chose the copper cup divination from PDM XIV: 395-427, and with the overconfidence of youth, performed it at a public ritual in my local area. Focusing on this case study, I will demonstrate that the rite was reduced and simplified in an attempt to facilitate its assimilation into the Neopagan framework of the early 21st century CE.

While The Moon card does the heavy lunar lifting in our favorite tarot decks, where else does she pop up? This workshop will present a brief history about Pamela Colman Smith, the artist behind the famous Rider Waite Smith (RWS) tarot deck. Then, We'll dive into the traditional RWS tarot deck, reviewing the cards that feature the Moon. We'll be discussing how it appears, what phase it's depicted in, and how this might lend itself towards the interpretation of the card. We'll then expand, looking at other decks that attendees bring with them (suggestion: bring your favorite deck, and sort the moon-bearing cards out ahead of time - you might be surprised at how many times the Moon appears!).
Let's trace the history of prosperity magic from its earliest textual roots to today. Can modern practitioners bridge the gap between the two?
When we are tired and burned out it is easy to fall into the cycle of self sabotage. Cuchulain is often called the greatest of mythical Irish warriors. Despite this many of his stories are about how the hero sabotages his own success. Most famously he spurs the aid of the Morrigan, and she attacks him in the form of a wolf, heifer, and eel. Through these shapes we can explore where in our lives we have self sabotaged our own success. Through the lessons of these animal forms and the Morrigan's interactions with Cuchulain we can learn to heal the wounds within ourselves that leads

Come explore how the things we do everyday in the 'burbs can naturally and very easily have a magickal element to them. This workshop discusses a suburban witchcraft practice by offering spells, mantras and other tools. Suburban life experience is just as magickal and spiritual as any others. Join me as we discuss the many advantages of being the witch next door. We suburban witches absolutely have an equal place at the witchcraft table.

Most Modern Pagans and Witches regard their practices as either ancient practices handed down secretly through centuries, or as intellectual reconstructions of those practices based on ancient records and archaeology. James Grimes, also known as Embreis23, argues that the truth is that Modern Paganism was created through the efforts an array of philosophers, witches, artists, and madfolk, to create by Magic something new: a path to human liberation and survival through the re-enchantment of the world.

First, we will overview traditions of practitioners whose knowledge of magic and healing comes from collaboration with fairy-beings and clarify what qualifies some herbs as ˜fairy herbs'. A selection of three plants will be analyzed from a cross-cultural perspective to learn how they can act as either propitiatory or apotropaics, depending on context. Participants will be invited to journey to a liminal space to meet their herbalist teacher from among the álfar. The ensuing conclusions will then mould into guidelines for personal practice. This class aims to bring practical information to those interested in cultivating relationships with the Norse-Germanic elves and related beings. The presentation is based on the eponymous book, Fairy Herbs for Fairy Magic, by author and presenter Daniela Simina

As long as language has existed, human beings have used symbols to communicate. Many times our guides and spirits will convey messages to us using our own personal vocabulary. This is why it's important to have a working library of personal meanings for as many symbols as you can, common and more obscure. This workshop is designed to help you develop your knowledge of symbols in a fun and interactive way. Whether your chosen form of divination is Tarot, Oracle, Lenormand, Kipper, Charms, Tea Leaves or just good old fashioned psychic readings, the information in this workshop will help to add depth and detail to your readings, enhancing the experience for everyone involved.
First, we will craft a wand using materials we will provide. Each participant will be given a package containing a bamboo shaft, a crystal and herbs to place in the hollow of the wand. Next will consecrate our wands to empower them, with a simple rite that creates holy water or Aqua Sancta. Then we will share simple techniques that you can perform with your new wand. We will invoke all four elements and two of spirit with our new wands by drawing the appropriate pentagrams in the air and visualizing and feeling the elemental energies. The wand and a tie dye warp for it will be yours to keep.
The first 25 people who attend will receive a free wand kit to assemble during the workshop. Each kit has a Bamboo wand, a Quartz Crystal Point, a bag of herbs to place inside the wand, and a Tie Die bandanna to wrap your wand in.

Due to the interesting cultural and historical context, hysteria and fascination with the occult have a lot in common, but not how you may think. Come hear clinical psychologist, bestselling steampunk author, and medical history lover Anne Bartolucci, Ph.D. explain: - Victorian psychological diagnoses - Why the Victorians were so fascinated with death - What we could learn from them - How the mental healing arts and spiritualist movement clashed, overlapped, and illustrated the shift in power dynamics in Victorian times.

Though a secularized version is now popular in productivity-hack and hustle culture, Stoicism originated as a holistic, pantheistic philosophy, a nondualist embrace of spirit inseparable from matter. While in some ways very modern, religious Stoicism is ready for revision based on new scientific knowledge on emotion, desire, the body, and Nature Herself. We'll discuss how the 3 branches of a Stoic education -- logic, physics, & ethics -- arose from Stoic theology, what relevance the traditional program of Stoic soul-healing has in modern witchcraft, and how we can hold these ancient disciplines alongside a witch's practice of personal sovereignty and magic-making.
This workshop had its origins in an ancient fragmentary document entitled the "Cauldron of Poesy". The text describes the human body as having three cauldrons and the relative position of these was thought to determine the overall health and state of mind of the person. We will take a look at each of these cauldrons and see how we can work with them to the benefit of our physical, emotional and spiritual health.
